What is asphalt?
Hot-mixed asphalt (HMA) is a combination of crushed stone, sand and liquid asphalt used to make roads, driveways and parking lots. What is liquid asphalt?
It is the bottom 3 ½ % of a barrel of crude oil. What kind of HMA do you use?
All HMA mixes in the DC metropolitan area is manufactured according to state specifications. Surface mix has ½” and smaller stone, intermediate mix has ¾” and smaller stone, and base mix has 1 ½” and smaller stone. All mixes have some sand and crushed stone dust to fill voids and, as a result, create more strength. Why did my asphalt crack?
Single cracks are expansion cracks caused by older asphalt expanding and contracting because of seasonal temperature changes. Multiple cracking, which looks like an alligator's back, is a sign of weakness beneath the asphalt. Why is the base weak beneath the asphalt?
Water. Excess moisture weakens the stone base and eventually the sub-grade, which is the soil beneath the stone. Typically this water permeates through cracks in the asphalt into the stone, then the sube-grade.Can I put another layer of asphalt over my existing asphalt (re-surface)?
Yes. And no. It depends on the condition of the existing asphalt. Can I put asphalt over my concrete driveway?
Yes. And no. It depends on the condition of the existing concrete. Over both asphalt and concrete, irregularities in the base will eventually show through the re-surfacing. It is called reflective cracking. What is your service area?
In Virginia: Alexandria City, Arlington, Fairfax City, Fairfax County, Prince William County, parts of Loudoun County. In Maryland: Montgomery County and commercial work in Prince George County. We also work in the District of Columbia. When should I seal my driveway?
Wait a year, then seal for cosmetic reasons. Can you attend our homeowner's association meeting to discuss our options?
Yes, at no charge.Should I take advantage of someone who knocks on my door with a “good deal”?
No! No! No! For any work you have done at your home or business, call them, don't let them “call you”. Leftover asphalt from another job will be too cold to use. Asphalt must be laid while it's hot. You probably won't have a contract, and you may not be able to find them later to correct problems with drainage, longevity, etc.
